Palm Springs still has uptown vibe

Palm Springs still has uptown vibe

The bartender shows us the photograph on his cellphone. It’s the very first ghost image I’ve ever seen and it looks very real and I sure didn’t expect to see it on a phone. “We think it’s Howard Hughes,” he says. “That’s the room where Marilyn Monroe used to stay. He used to visit her all the time.”

Strange things happen in the Movie Colony district of Palm Springs. This is the neighbourhood where 1950s Hollywood movie stars came to escape Los Angeles and to party, now being re-born as the Uptown Design District. The Triada Hotel sits at the heart of the action. The fading 1940s building built by the wife of movie star Alan Ladd, has been totally refurbished and reborn. With its whitewashed adobe walls and palm trees (never mind ghosts) the boutique hotel looks like the setting for a Hotel California video.
