Guide to America’s Best Clothing Optional Beaches

Travel Tips | Rayme Gorniak | August 2, 2025

Looking to ditch the tan lines and soak up some sun in the most natural way possible? Whether it’s the allure of an all-over tan or just a bucket-list adventure, America’s best clothing-optional beaches have you (barely) covered. Here’s the scoop on some of America’s top spots to strip down and soak it up.

What Makes These Beaches Special?

Clothing-optional beaches are more than just places to bronze freely. They’re judgment-free zones full of body positivity, stunning views, and laid-back vibes. Whether you’re an adventurous newbie or a seasoned beach bum, there’s something incredibly freeing about packing only the essentials (towel, sunscreen, and confidence).

Please keep in mind that some of the beaches below are not officially nude (luckily the authorities tend to look the other way when it comes to sunbathing in the buff but that is not guaranteed, so be alert) or at least nude-all-over (meaning you might need to plan some extra time in your beach day for a distant trek to the secluded sand and surf to sunbathe in the nude.)

Quick Etiquette FYI

  • Keep it classy, not flashy. Nudity is cool; lewdness is not.
  • Check the rules. Some nudity zones are unofficial and require discretion.
  • Respect personal space and avoid unsolicited conversations.

So, if you’re ready to lose your inhibitions and tan au naturel — let’s get nekid! Just be sure to bring the sunscreen.

Here Are America’s Must-Visit Clothing Optional Beaches:

Fire Island, New York

This iconic destination comes with a side of LGBTQ+ history. Lighthouse Beach offers sections for everyone, from straight couples to queer travelers, and the stunning natural views are just a bonus. While technically banned in 2013, nudity is often unofficially tolerated here, so tread lightly (and fully enjoy the vibe). Pro tip: The western zone, closest to the parking lot, is generally preferred by straight couples and families. The eastern zone is where gay men tend to gather.

South Padre Island, TX – UFO Beach

Follow the main strip to the northern end, and look for the unmistakable flying saucer buoy. UFO Beach is where modesty goes on vacation, especially during spring break. PSA for your trip prep: 4WD vehicles are an absolute must to reach this sandy hotspot.

San Diego’s La Jolla’s Black’s Beach, California

Nestled beneath stunning cliffs, Black’s Beach is worth the 15-minute hike. Want the good news? Burning calories from the trek means you’ve earned that sunbathing session. Bonus points for beautiful views and a secluded vibe.

Moshup Beach, Martha’s Vineyard, MA

Gay Head Cliffs (yep, that’s the name) keep this sandy gem discreet. Perfect for a light hike followed by SPF-slathered downtime.

Haulover Beach, Miami, FL

One of the most popular nude beaches in the U.S., Haulover is known for its white sands and its global crowd. A 30-minute drive from South Beach drops you into this nudist paradise. Don’t forget your sunscreen, your sunnies, and maybe that high school Spanish phrasebook for an international chat or two.

Collins Beach, Portland, OR

Not a fan of saltwater? Collins Beach sits on the banks of the Columbia River and offers a wooded escape since the late 1970s. Keep an eye out for signs marking the nude-friendly area.

Feeling Inspired?

America’s best clothing-optional beaches are waiting for you to take a deep breath, ditch your layers, and connect with nature in the most freeing way possible. Which one’s calling your name?

Start your adventure with confidence, plenty of sunscreen, and a “no tan lines” attitude.
