Hang out with your ghoul friends on the banks of the Delaware River in New Hope for one of the town’s most fabulous fall traditions—the High Heel Drag Race. Sponsored by New Hope Celebrates and hosted by the legendary Miss Pumpkin, this annual event blends Halloween, drag, and just the right amount of chaos.
The rules are simple, but the results are hilarious. Contestants must wear high heels at least three inches tall—sorry, no kitten heels allowed. They must also dress in Halloween-inspired drag that’s as spooky, campy, or outrageous as possible. Then comes the challenge: carrying a pumpkin up a hill, decorating it, and racing back down while keeping the pumpkin intact. Think of it as part fashion show, part obstacle course, and part comedy sketch come to life.
Spectators line the street to cheer on the brave competitors, and the crowd is massive. More than 1,000 people gather each year, proving this event has become a staple of the New Hope Halloween season. While it’s free to watch, would-be racers must pay a $25 non-refundable registration fee in advance. Spots are limited to just 15 contestants, which keeps the competition fierce and the antics manageable.
The fun doesn’t stop at the finish line. The High Heel Drag Race New Hope continues with a fall-themed afterparty at Havana New Hope. Hosted by Miss New Hope Celebrates Phoebe Manntrapp, Mr. New Hope Celebrates Amita Lady, and other local queens, the event is a glittery continuation of the day’s festivities. With DJ Gavin Patrick McIlhinney spinning the tracks, the party keeps rolling well into the night.
There’s also a 50/50 raffle and limited-edition commemorative T-shirts for sale, with proceeds benefiting New Hope Celebrates.
Bottom line: the High Heel Drag Race is more than a race. It’s a celebration of drag, community, and Halloween spirit, served with a high-heeled kick of camp.
