Carnival turns Provincetown into 'Candy Land'

Revelers walk along Commercial Street during last year's comic book-themed parade.

The 37th annual Carnival celebration will kick off Saturday for a week of activities, with the “Candy Land”-themed Carnival Parade on Thursday as the central event.

The parade, which begins at 3 p.m. and features comedian Sandra Bernhard as grand marshal, will leave from the Harbor Hotel at 698 Commercial St., and continue down Commercial Street to Franklin Street. More than 1,000 people may be marching in the parade, and the crowds of watchers start lining up early in the morning.

The first event of the week on Saturday, however, will be the Art’s Dune Tour sunset wine and cheese reception, which is available with a Carnival VIP pass. Attendees get the chance to watch the sun set over the water and photographers are encouraged to take advantage of the amazing views. The tour departs at 6 p.m. and returns at 8 p.m. at 4 Standish St.
