How Asbury Park became the ‘coolest small town in America’

It’s  safe to say Danny Clinch is a pretty good judge of what’s cool. The nationally acclaimed photographer has shot magazine covers for everyone from Bruce Springsteen to the late Tupac Shakur.

So during the 1980s and ’90s, when bands wanted a good suggestion for a cool place to do photo shoots, the Toms River native always had one place in mind: Asbury Park.

These days, there’s a lot of folks who seem to agree with his judgment about the 1.4-square-mile city, with a population just under 16,000.

Most recently, USA TODAY, the parent company of the Asbury Park Press, has it in the running for its 2018 “Best Small Town Cultural Scene Award.”
