Icon, an L.G.B.T. Nightclub in Astoria, Queens

Is Astoria becoming the next Hell’s Kitchen? In the last year, three L.G.B.T. nightspots have popped up in this diversifying neighborhood of Queens, the latest being Icon. Opened in January by a longtime Astoria resident, Nick Lion, Icon occupies a former Greek bar that has been given a makeover, with Swarovski-bedazzled lamps, studded black banquettes and swirly wall accents. One thing missing are big TV screens. “I don’t want a Britney Spears video to be the star,” he said. “I want the crowd to be the main attraction.”
