LGBT Pride: 10 ways to celebrate Pride Month at the Jersey Shore

The Jersey Shore is in a Pride state of mind.

June has been commonly acknowledged as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month for decades; New York City hosted its first gay pride parade in June 1970 one year after the infamous riot at the Stonewall Inn.

By 1992, the Jersey Pride LGBT parade and festival had made its debut in Asbury Park, where it still remains today.

“Pride means different things to different people,” said Laura Pople, president of the Highland Park-based Jersey Pride. “For some people, it may be the first time that they’re ever venturing out into the LGBT community, seeking and encountering a safe and welcoming environment.
