Provincetown has long attracted and nurtured artists and writers drawn to the area’s natural beauty, its history and culture. With the emergence of the Gabrielle A. Hanna Provincetown Film Institute, it may soon be a destination for filmmakers, too.
The institute — named after Provincetown International Film Festival’s now former longtime executive director Gabby Hanna — will play a crucial role in helping independent films get made and seen and to draw filmmakers to Provincetown from all over the world. Hanna, who stepped down in 2013 after 13 years as director of the film festival, is now producing independent films such as Ira Sachs’ well-regarded 2014 feature “Love Is Strange,” which starred John Lithgow and Alfred Molina and screened during last year’s PIFF.
