On April 20, 2024, get ready for the hilarious Conch Republic Drag Race on Duval St.! Drag queens from Key West’s LGBTQ district will strut their stuff in high heels. But don’t be fooled by the fierce competition, this event is all about love and acceptance.

The fun kicks off at 2:00 p.m. outside Bourbon St. Pub. Organizers will spoof the auto-racing vibe as “pit crew” members, complete with checkered flags and roaring engine sounds from a local DJ.

But the real showstopper? Dudes rocking lady looks, sprinting in short dresses, full glam, and teased wigs, dodging wipeouts and twisted heels like runway pros. Forget the Kentucky Derby, this is the most fabulous two minutes in sports.

Spectators will cheer as racers navigate tire obstacles and street hazards. And don’t miss the diva-style ride on Duval Street in shopping-cart “hot rods” pushed by local male dancers. After the event, join in on the afterparty at Bourbon St. Pub. Prizes will be awarded for best costume, most creative drag name and personality, and of course, the winner of the race. But let’s be real, it’s not really about who crosses the finish line first. It’s about celebrating diversity and embracing our unique identities.

The drag event is the highlight of the Conch Republic Independence Celebration, a week-long festival that commemorates Key West’s brief secession from the US in 1982. So, want in on the action? Race registration is free for all brave souls willing to rock towering heels and eccentric drag attire!

Note: Our stay in Key West was sponsored by the Equator Resort and some activities and meals were partially covered by the Monroe County Tourist Development Council. We won’t compromise integrity for sponsorship; opinions expressed are our own.
