Summer travel underscores the importance of skin protection

Travel Tips | Raman Madan | July 14, 2025

Summer is in full swing, and with sunny beach days calling your name, it’s time to double down on protecting your skin from harmful UV rays. Did you know 90% of nonmelanoma skin cancers are linked to UV exposure? Whether you’re lounging on the sand, diving into the waves, or exploring new destinations while traveling, make sun protection your top priority this season. Knowing how to prevent skin cancer can help you stay safe while enjoying every sunny moment!

But it’s not just about skin cancer. Sun protection can also prevent premature aging, like pesky age spots and leathery skin, helping you maintain a youthful glow, Northwell Health says. Thankfully, keeping your skin healthy while enjoying summer—whether at home or when traveling—is easier than you think. Here’s how:

1. Schedule Professional Skin Checks

Early detection saves lives. Book an annual skin exam with a dermatologist who can check you from your scalp to the spaces between your toes. Don’t forget to remove all makeup and nail polish to ensure a thorough assessment. If your dermatologist finds anything unusual, they’ll recommend a biopsy. Catching these issues early is one of the best defenses against skin cancer.

2. Make Sunscreen Your Best Friend

The FDA recommends using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day—even if it’s cloudy! Cover all exposed skin thoroughly (think ears, hands, feet, lips) and reapply every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating. For those with little hair, sunscreen for your scalp is a must. If you’re a parent, consult your pediatrician for advice on protecting infants under six months old.

3. Understand Your Skin Type

Got fair skin, light eyes, or light-colored hair? Then you’re naturally more sensitive to UV rays and at a higher risk for sun damage. And if you or anyone in your family has a history of skin cancer, double up on protection. Be sure to inform your dermatologist of any medications or vitamins you’re taking, as some can increase sun sensitivity.

4. Don’t Rely Solely on Sunscreen

Sunscreen is fantastic, but it’s not a complete solution. Pair it with protective clothing, like wide-brimmed hats that shield your ears and neck, and long-sleeved shirts in breathable fabrics for maximum coverage.

5. Protect Your Eyes, Too

UV rays don’t just harm your skin; they can also damage your eyes. Reflected sunlight from water, sand, or even snow intensifies exposure, increasing the risk of problems like cataracts and skin damage around your eyes. Protect yourself by investing in sunglasses that block 100% of UV rays (look for UV400 labels). Combine them with a wide-brimmed hat for full coverage.

The American Academy of Dermatology estimates that 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, with 9,500 cases diagnosed daily. By following these simple steps and staying vigilant with regular skin checks, you can reduce your risk and keep your skin radiant and healthy for years to come.

Enjoy the sunshine—just be smart about how to prevent skin cancer while soaking up those summer rays!
