Top Four Patriotic Cities for Memorial Day Weekend 2025

Travel Tips | Jim Werner | May 11, 2025

To honor the nation’s fallen military men and women, Americans do what they do best: Celebrate. For many, Memorial Day Weekend, May 23-26, 2025, represents barbecues, sparklers, and some good old-fashioned seasonal fun. For others, it’s all about recognizing the patriotic spirit with parades, concerts, and meaningful observances. And these patriotic Memorial Day cities may do it best.

Below are four cities to experience the heart of patriotism during Memorial Day Weekend 2025, along with some LGBTQ+ events you won’t want to miss.

Washington, D.C.

What better place to fully soak up Memorial Day vibes than in the nation’s capital? Washington, D.C. hosts the nation’s largest Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 26, at 2 p.m. Expect marching bands, service members decked out in uniform, and an overwhelming sense of national pride. Pro tip? Arrive early to snag the perfect viewing spot.

Bonus Queer Event

Black, bold, and beautiful? Don’t miss DC Black Pride, running from May 23–26. Known for its vibrant queer culture, D.C. will have parties, panels, and performances all weekend. Come to honor history, stay for the dance floor.

Chicago

Looking for a mix of history, celebration, and a splash of leather? Chicago’s Memorial Day Parade is one of the oldest in the nation (148 years and counting!) and kicks off on May 24 at noon. The procession begins at State Street and Lake Street, running through downtown with marching bands, veterans’ groups, and plenty of fanfare.

If you stick around, you’ll definitely catch some of Chicago’s other Memorial Day highlights. The Navy Pier fireworks on Saturday, May 24, at 10 p.m. are not to be missed, and Chicago’s rooftop bars make the perfect spot to toast the start of summer.

Bonus Queer Event

Hope you packed your harness because it’s International Mister Leather (IML) Weekend in Chicago! From May 22–26, leather-clad revelers will come together to celebrate inclusivity, kink, and fabulous community.

Philadelphia

If you’re seeking the ultimate combo of history and color, Philadelphia’s got you covered. With its iconic landmarks like Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell, Philly brings a rich sense of tradition to Memorial Day. The celebration wouldn’t be complete without its renowned patriotic concerts and fireworks displays to light up the night sky.

Bonus Queer Event

Feeling musical? After a day of festivities, head to Tavern on Camac for Showtune Sundays on May 25. Belt out a few Broadway classics and soak up some good old-fashioned cabaret vibes.

New York City

For sheer variety, New York City takes the (rainbow) cake. With multiple Memorial Day parades across its five boroughs on May 26, NYC creates space for both megawatt celebrations and neighborhood charm. Want the biggest parade? Head to Queens, where hundreds of participants will wave flags and bring the noise.

Bonus Queer Event

God bless Fleet Week! If you’re single and ready to mingle, there’s no better place to meet a sailor. Enjoy city-wide events during this military celebration and have that Top Gun moment you’ve always dreamed of.

Don’t Miss Out!

Memorial Day Weekend 2025 is more than just a break from work (or an excuse to overeat hot dogs). It’s a chance to honor history, experience culture, and connect with a sense of community—patriotic and queer. Where will you be celebrating?
